The Semester System will be introduced in all the affiliated colleges of the Mizoram University from the academic session 2011.
I. Important features of the New System:
- The UG Courses shall consist of three academic years with two semesters in each year. Each year shall be divided into two semesters;
- Each semester shall carry 400 marks and the total marks for the course shall be 2400;
- Each paper in Science will carry 100 marks out of which 70 marks are allotted for Theory and 30 marks for Practical. The theory marks will comprise of 55 marks for end semester examination and 15 marks for continuous assessment. The Practical marks shall comprise of 20 marks for end semester and 10 marks for continuous assessment. Non-practical papers shall comprise of 75 marks for end semester examination and 25 marks for continuous assessment;
- Three class tests, out of which one may be seminar/home assignment, are to be conducted each in Theory and Practical Papers separately for continuous assessment.
- Duration of each Theory class shall be one hour whereas 2 hours for practical class;
- The odd semester shall commence from June till mid-November and the even semester from mid-November till May in each academic year;
- Semester examination shall be conducted twice - October/November for odd semesters and April/Mat for even semesters;
- The working days for each semester shall not be less than 90 days excluding holidays/sports/exams/semester break/vacation, if any;
- A candidate shall be permitted to proceed from the 1st semester upto Final semester irrespective of his/her failure in any of the semester examination subject to the condition that the candidates shall appear for all the arrear papers of each course(s) along with the concerned semester examinations. No candidate shall be allowed to appear in any course more than three times;
- A candidate shall be eligible to appear in the end semester examinations only if he/she attends a minimum of 75% of attendance as per University Ordinance;
II. Eligibility for Admission
- Pass in the Higher Secondary Examination or its equivalent conducted by any recognised Board of the State or Central government.
- Condidates passing with vocational courses, the equivalence may be decided by the college Principals.
III. Conduct of Examination
- University shall conduct all End-Semester Examinations;
- All practical examinations shall be conducted by the concerned college;
- Each College shall have a Moderation Board/Committee to moderate the marks awarded to a candidate through Continuous Internal Assessment and Practical Examinations;
- The question paper will contain - Multiple Choice (10 questions carrying 1 mark each and two questions from each Unit), Short Answer (5 questions carrying 3 marks each and one question from each Unit) and, Descriptive (5 out of 10 carrying 10 marks)
IV. Classification of Successful Candidates
- A candidate must secure a minimum of 40% of marks in each paper;
- The marks obtained by a student in all six semesters shall be taken into account while declaring the results;
- Grades shall be awarded on the basis of marks obtained in each semester;
- Cumulative grade shall be awarded on the basis of grades obtained in all the semesters.
V. Ranking : Subject wise ranking shall be awarded. Gold medal shall be awarded subject wise only those candidates who secure overall first class first position.
VI. Academic Calendar
- Commencement of 1st/3rd/5th Semester Classes : 1st June
- Examination of 1st/3rd/5th Semester : 17th October to 4th November
- Mid-Semester Break : 5th November to 13th November
- Commencement of 2nd/4th/6th Semester Classes : 14th November
- Examination of 2nd/4th/6th Semester : 1st May to 21st May
- Winter Vacation : 17th December to 16th January.
